The first stop in my 4 day trip to the was along the lines of a rest stop. The city of Queensbury popped up at the right time and we were in need of something to eat. It was out of the corner of our eyes where we saw Friendly’s. Friendly’s is an American diner chain that also touts their wide variety of ice cream.

The Mile-End district of Montreal is literally bursting at the seams with places to visit. In the last post on this blog, the latest brunch and burger offering was looked at. With that place in the books, I just couldn’t resist crossing the street and sampling some of the most talked about ice cream on the island of Montreal. That place is called Kem CoBa and they’re one of the top ice cream vendors in this city.

My recent visit to Sparta didn’t quite end over there. As some things go these days, this was another impromptu decision made by curious eaters. While we can all list the major players in the ice cream game of Montreal, there is one that may or may not be a contender. Just last year, the Tim Horton’s franchise put forth its first foray in the Montreal area by opening Cold Stone Creamery across this fair island.

I like screaming and I’m sure you like to scream too. But the thing that I know everyone loves is ice cream. Just like screaming can come at any moment, so does ice cream. Much like my impromptu visit to Prato, there was nothing going to stop us from crossing the street to a Montreal Main-stay, Ripples.

Ben & Jerry’s has played an important part in the last year for me. On this day, I just want to highlight something that they do once every year. On a day in April, Ben & Jerry’s offer a free cone to their customers. Regardless of what kind of weather it is, you’ll find droves of people lining up just for that one scoop of ice cream. For me, it’s been 9 months since I’ve had any chocolate therapy and I wasn’t about to pass this up.

My search for decent ice cream has taken me to a place that everyone keeps on mentioning when it comes to top contenders. I had plenty of opportunities over the last 6 months to get pretty decent ice cream and I did not hesitate at the chance to come here. As was the case with the Greek restaurant visited on the same day, I was accompanied by my very knowledgeable educational cohort.

As some of you know, ice cream has become a recent fixture in my excursions. I have been quite lucky to have been surrounded by a few ice cream experts in recent months. Those individuals have paved the way for dessert goodness.

Laura Secord is a chocolate candy store that serves ice cream. I can’t count the number of times last year when they saved me during a heat wave. Since I wasn’t about to turn Quebec City upside down to look for a Dairy Queen or something equivalent to Ben & Jerry’s, I went to the province’s largest mall for my fix.

Orange Cream Flavored Ice Cream
Tried: July 8, 2011
When I saw this flavor in the counter, I couldn’t resist. Short of being bacon flavored, orange is something that I absolutely love. Even though I found the chocolate to be out of place, the orange ice cream was pretty good. It didn’t take very long for me to make it disappear. The only down side is that I felt this flavor doesn’t go well with cones.

Chocolate and Nuts Gelato
Tried: June 30, 2011
This tasted fine with your normal chocolate taste. My one complaint is that I counted the number of nuts in the whole serving. After the exhausting process of counting, I came up with two in all. So, I’m thinking about having this renamed to “Chocolate and Maybe Nuts Gelato.” It’s not that I didn’t enjoy this, but I was kinda let down by false advertising.

Ben & Jerry’s was vote as one of the top 5 ice creams in Montreal. I tried them for the first time during the last free cone day. They won me over. During extremely warm days, I like to finish with a visit with some ice cream. It’s a way to cope with weather that I don’t do well during. I’ve been in this location so much recently that they gave me one of those “buy 5, get one free” cards. I fully intend on getting that free one before the end of Summer 2011.

Chocolate Therapy
This is chocolate ice cream, combined with crumbled chocolate cookies and swirls of chocolate pudding.
