The trip to New Jersey/New York has now come full circle. For 4 days in the beginning of April, the experience in those two iconic states has been one that shall never be forgotten. At this point, it was time to make our way back home. It was only fitting that since our trip came full circle, that we made one last stop in the Queensbury area to have one last meal as a group.

After 4 years and 99 Annex posts, we’ve finally reached the 100th post in that series. One of the most frequented types of cuisine for the Annex is that of Greek. For this occasion, the place that was put to the test was Nostos. I might have thought of something a little more special for the 100th post, but Greek cuisine has played a large part of the Annex and I was more than happy to set foot in Nostos.

One of the most highly contested areas in Montreal cuisine is that of Greek food. There are literally dozens of worthy contenders to the title of who makes Greek food worth trying. While we all have our trusted favorites, once in a while. there comes new players that we must stop to take notice. One of the latest players on the scene is a place in the Plateau area of Montreal called Estia.

Pine Avenue is one of those streets on the island of Montreal that isn’t that long, but still lives long in the hearts of the citizens of this island. The street is home to many hospitals, school, and iconic businesses. One of those businesses is a pizza place affectionately known as Mamma’s.

During the 2011-2012 season of the GBS, Greek food has found a way into my plans when it comes to eating. While there are so many big time names in that realm of cuisine on the island of Montreal, we rarely get to add newcomers to that list. On a late June afternoon, I was about to be taken to a place called Sparta to see how a relative unknown in Greek cuisine would fare.

Greek food and large group gatherings have become a vital part of my food adventures in Montreal. Ever since I’ve been to my first real Greek restaurant in September of 2011, I’ve been looking forward to every and each opportunity I could get. Most of those Greek outings, even if they were organized by me, came from the head of someone else. This would be the first time that I would be the one to choose the Greek restaurant. The pressure was going to be on my head.

My visit to Le Jardin de Panos is the third in the series of outings as part of the Fat Squirrel Society (inside joke). The first visit was in October for Korean BBQ and the second was in the midst of Chinatown. So, we took a little bit of a curve by going to see what other Greek restaurants there were to explore in Montreal. I honestly thought that I reached the plateau of Greek cuisine with my other visits, so I was hoping to expand to that list.

2011 has been a big year for me to try and get to like Greek food. Over the course of this calendar year, I got a know a Greek colleague who basically has been guiding me through Montreal’s Greek cuisine. But, I need to say that I’m not the only one who wants to expand their Greek horizons. Shortly after my post on Ellada at the end of September, a conversation on Twitter gave me quite the idea.

It’s been a fully charged Greek cuisine week for me. When I heard that our colleagues at school were planning a retirement party at this restaurant, I had mixed feelings. For one, my fellow food fanatic teacher cohort, who is Greek by the way, did not have rave reviews for the food. I also wasn’t going to pull out the full food blogger Mr. Lew hat for this evening, but I was convinced otherwise by my cohort. He was hoping that I would back up his previous statements. The rest of the personnel at school all felt that the food was quite good. I think I was going to make it my goal to see the truth since I obviously eat a lot.

Having 8 hours to find something to do and having colleagues who love to eat are the greatest 2 things to go together. I’ve been lucky to have a fellow English teacher who knows about places for Greek food. On this day, after 3 months of anticipation, we were finally on our way to Tripolis. If you have a very good memory, months ago, I asked for a vote between pizza and Greek food. I completed the pizza part in July and finally got around to the Greek part on this faithful day. I was actually supposed to go here last June, but a very heated union meeting had me flabbergasted and lacking motivation to move. So, here was my chance to put my colleague’s tastes to the test once again.
