In life, there are two words that we all have heard of that ruminate in the back of one’s mind and that’s the ‘bucket list.’ Over the course of the last 9 months, in planning my incursion into Philadelphia, there was one place that couldn’t be avoided because it was becoming one of the hottest places in the entire United States. Well, I can officially cross a place off of my burger bucket list and it’s simply known as PYT.

2013 was a breakthrough year for Mr. Lew’s Great Burger Search. During that calendar year, I had the chance to go to our neighbors to the south to eat more burgers than ever before. I wasn’t about to let 2014 go without more opportunities of that variety. For the first time since last May, this search finds itself across the border in the capital of New York state at The Standard.
The month of March is usually a very significant month for me. Each year, I make some of my best visits. This year, there’s no exception. For the first time ever, I got the chance to visit the city of Philadelphia, thus getting 3 of their top burgers done. In the weeks that will come, I hope to share with you the fruits of that labor, alongside the highlights of a trip that I won’t soon forget.

The city of Montréal has pretty much anything that you’re looking for and in literally any category. Aside from some of the best eating experiences in the world, the cultural scene is one that you can put against any other major city on this planet. Montréal’s Quartier des Spectacles in home to many great venues and a whole lot of restaurants like Café République.

In 1912, the world was reeling from one of the most documented accidents ever. That year may have been quite tragic, but there was at least one bright spot in this very city that we can be proud of. For over 100 years, Montreal Pool Room has been serving the right kind of food to generations of hungry citizens.

Have you ever had a game plan that just didn’t go your way? That’s to be expected in the type of world we live in. With that in mind, you have a Plan B. But, sometimes, even those kind of things fail and then, you have to go on the fly. That’s how I ended up at MVP.

Whenever I look for a new place for this search, I try to find things that set it apart. Montréal has so many places that have unique quirks which attract people from far and wide. When I think of my own childhood and the fizzy drink known as spruce beer, I only have fond memories. What makes things ever better is the fact that there’s a place in this city that makes their own and they’re quite proud of it. That place is Paul Patates.
Now that we’re deep into 2014, we can think about what the year has in store for us. As I’m writing this, there isn’t much time left until I get a chance to expand my boundaries once again. Despite a few restraints on my upcoming trip, there is a lot of room to move around and get some really good burgers done. So, in a few weeks, you’ll get to see the fruits of my labor and I can’t wait to share them all, no matter how big or small they might be.

Westmount is one of the nicest and most affluent neighborhoods on the entire island of Montréal. Part of the reason for that reputation is the storied past that is such a vibrant part of today’s culture. Included in the city of Westmount is a restaurant that lays claim to being the oldest on the entire island. Since 1920, Chez Nick has been a vital part of all that is Montréal.

Despite what people may want to tell you, we’re all blessed to live in or near such a great city like Montréal. With that being said, why is the culture of this city so intertwined with drinking? I might not be the best person to answer that, mostly because I don’t drink and I don’t plan on it. I think I got a chance to get a glimpse of that scene when I got my latest burger at Pub Quartier Latin.

Laval is growing by leaps and bounds, but there’s one thing that isn’t growing that much. The island is populated by large restaurant chains that serve food that doesn’t really do much to churn one’s imagination. If you’re really looking for something different, you have to dig deep. Luckily, there’s a restaurant, that’s been open for over 40 years, that’s right under your nose and that’s Chez Gérard.

In Montréal, there are those restaurants that we all know. They are easy on the wallet and they serve all those items that fall under the category of the guilty pleasure. They are the home of the steamies, poutines, and the extremely greasy French fry. You may not put much stock into their influence, but they do have some. One of those places is called Patate Rouge.
The beginning of a new year is well behind us. In any line of work, January is a month where things slow down a bit as we all catch our collective breaths from a hectic holiday season. Here, at the search, it’s business as usual. 2013 was such a landmark year, so much so that the 12 months will have a whole lot of trouble living up. But, with that being said, I’m going to try with everything I have to make it quite the year.

One of the best things about searching for burgers is the fact that you never quite know where you’re going to find them. Sometimes, it’s not quite the end result that matters, but the journey it takes to get there. What makes this even better is that this latest location marries two things I like a whole lot, burgers and Greek restaurants. The one place you can find this special burgers is at Milos.

The West Island of Montréal is one special part of this great region we all share. One of the things that dominates that area is the abundance of big box stores and chain restaurants. If you’re looking for places that don’t fit those categories, you might be in a for a long search. But, there are times where places like Dutchys might just pop up.
