Visit:  August 4, 2013

Imagine you’re stuck in traffic on a nice day and you can’t wait to get that one frozen item.  Well, if you’re ever lost navigating the immense sector that is Quarter Dix30, you know that you need a reward for that.  By getting through the gridlock in the area, you can settle down for something sweet at La Fontana Gelati Bar and Lounge.

On the heels of our visit to Skara, Steakman and I decided to go elsewhere for dessert.  Quartier Dix30 boasts a lot of places that will satisfy anyone’s whims in that category.  From gelato to cake, you won’t come up short in the dessert category.  The only problem for us is that we’ve been to those places before.  Luckily, there was that one place that we haven’t been to and that was La Fontana.

My one hesitation about going to La Fontana lies in the food menu.  They offer a burger.  It is very rare that I would go into a place and not order a burger.  La Fontana offers a burger on their menu and I was hoping to get to try it.  However, me being quite full from the meal I just had, having a burger wouldn’t be an option.

We arrived to the establishment quite late in the evening and we were relieved to find out that they were still open.  You can’t take many chances on a Sunday.  Turns out that they open until midnights on that particular day of the week.  We weren’t the only table being served, as there was another one already there.  As time passed, one more table came in for dessert.  For Sunday and the time of night, you couldn’t ask for much more.

La Fontana is quite the nice looking place.  Situated on the second floor of the central building at Dix30, you get quite the view on the entire Brossard skylight.  With a big screen playing sports, you can lounge around for a while.  At this point of the evening, it seemed like the staff was cleaning up and setting in for the night.

La Fontana’s specialty is gelato.  The variety of gelato and ice cream you can get over here is on par with the other major players.  Depending on when you show up, you have to be aware that some flavors do run out.

Oreo Ice Cream

Steakman’s ice cream of choice went along the Oreo cookie route.  I didn’t really think you could make ice cream like that, but then again, I’ve had frozen soft serve with cookies in it, so anything is possible.  Going with two scoops, Steakman’s first choice wasn’t available.  For what it was worth, I don’t think it mattered, as he like this one a lot.

If you’re like me, ice cream is rarely your first choice.  Most of the time, I like to go the cake route.  When I walked through the door and saw all the various types of cake, I knew exactly what I wanted.

Ferrero Rocher Cake

If there’s one thing I know, I can be bought easily.  Now, it’s not as obvious as I what I tend to obsess with.  People have offered to bring me packs of bacon for an incentive.  I always turn that down because it simply creates more work for me.  Bringing me a pack of bacon forces me to get up and cook.  Let’s be honest, nobody wants that.  On the other hand, the spherical chocolate gem that is the Ferrero Rocher requires no effort and goes down easy every time.  A box of those will make me very happy.

So, when you have a cake made from that pure element of joy, can you go wrong?  In this case, you can’t.  From the top of the cake to the inner portions, you have Ferrero Rocher all over the place.  Half of Rocher lies on top of the cake like an ornament to a Christmas tree.  With each bite through the inner portions of cake, you get the same kind of consistency as if you were eating the smaller candy treat.  In all, I can’t complain.

Iced Tea

To compliment my cake, I went with a dosage of house iced tea.  The unique feature in this one was the frozen slush in the middle of the drink.  As that melts, it’s like you get a second wind of sorts.

Final Verdict

Our initial visit to La Fontana will definitely be followed up by a return visit when, of course, the burger will be taken head on.  The desserts, whether it be gelato or cake, were a nice touch to finish a hectic trip through Quartier Dix30.  I’m looking forward to trying that Ferrero Rocher cake once again.
