Growing up, there was always that one item of comfort food that everyone never argued about.  It doesn’t matter who you are or what kind of background you have, you have to know that the grilled cheese sandwich is a staple of childhood.  With the burgeoning Montreal food truck scene, there is one truck that is taking advantage of our desires to relive our childhood, P.A. & Gargantua.

For a third day, I spent an afternoon at the Bouffons Montreal site of Just For Laughs.  The amalgamation of 41 food vendors is something that was quite amazing to see.  Now that the period of time is over where this food zone ruled over all, we have to get back to tracking our trucks across the island.  I still had a lot of ground to cover.  This is the third truck to be featured this year on this blog and there are at least 3 more to come over the next few posts.

P.A. & Gargantua, the mobile grilled cheese specialists, got my attention when I passed by during my second visit to the Bouffons Montreal site.  Their menu listed something that I knew I couldn’t turn down.  Anyone who follows my endeavors will know that I have a thing for bacon.  When I saw that there was a bacon grilled cheese sandwich, I knew that with my next visit to the site, I would be making a b-line to this particular truck.

The ordering process at this truck is much like all the others.  You put in your order at the sliding door at the front and then you wait.  It was at this time where I noticed this person just hanging around.  This was one of those laid back people with no care in the world, yacking it up with the cook.  They ate their grilled cheese sandwich in like two bites, took a look around the area, and came back for more small talk.  It was like a grilled cheese groupie handing around.

When I sat down to eat my grilled cheese sandwich, I couldn’t help but try to be conspicuous with my picture taking.  There was this gentleman sitting next to me and before he left, he asked me if it was good.  I had to reply that I hoped it would be.  Then, I gave him some lame excuse as to why I was taking pictures.  Hiding what I do in public kind of sucks, but it keeps me going about my duties unhindered.  Those were the kinds of sightings that made this particular food truck experience interesting.

Bacon Grilled Cheese

This grilled cheese sandwich includes shallots confit, smoked butter, and bacon.  The cheese used in this particular sandwich comes from Isle-aux-Grues.

In all of my total 2013 food truck outings, this one was probably one of the easiest to eat.  You can probably walk around with this item without any fear of losing any of the food you have in your hands.  Plus, they are cut in triangles, which makes the eating process a whole lot more fun.

At this particular moment, I have to go off on a tangent, so you might want to skip this paragraph if you don’t like reading random thoughts.  Is it me, or does eating a grilled cheese sandwich cut up in a triangle make it a whole lot more satisfying than doing so in a square method.  As a kid, I would refuse to eat my grilled cheese sandwich unless they were cut into triangles.  I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.

One of the things I would judge when it comes to this grilled cheese sandwich was its use of bacon.  In this sandwich, they don’t use the normal kind of bacon that you would get at the supermarket, but this thick slabbed version.  In my opinion, that was an awesome decision because you taste it a whole lot easier and it doesn’t hinder the eating process.  Eating crispy bacon in a sandwich like this might be a little hard to do and a tad bit uncomfortable.

In all, it was a sandwich that I really enjoyed from the first bite to the last.  It is an item that is really easy to pick up and eat.  From the cheese to the bread, there is no awkward taste and everything meshes really well together.

Final Verdict

The one challenge that P.A. & Gargantua will have to set itself apart from all the other similar trucks is to offer something unique.  The fact their grilled cheese sandwiches are easy to eat and do exactly what they’re supposed to do makes them so effective.
