When I found out that one of my colleagues was organizing a Friday night outing in the theme of “Quebec,” I wasn’t so drawn in.  It wasn’t until I found out that the first half of the evening was going to be held at one of the places on my Burger Search list.  From that time on, I knew I was coming for two reasons, la Compagnie et le Burger.

The theme of the restaurant is obviously centered around beer.  Nearly everything on the menu is cooked in beer or other alcoholic substances.  It is generally something that I try to avoid since I don’t drink.  As a matter of fact, one of my pet peeves is having to put up with people trying to convince me to drink or telling me I’m crazy that I don’t.  It’s a choice people, live with it.  My rationale is that I’d like to make all my mistakes sober and I do make a lot of them.

The first thing you notice when you set foot in this place, in the evening, is that it’s extremely dark inside.  A person like me can really speculate as to why this was the case.  For one, it was extremely difficult to read the menus.  Yes, I pluralized menus and I’ll explain why soon enough.  I know people will tell me that I’m still relatively young and shouldn’t complain about such things, but think of the people who have trouble seeing in daylight.  Believe me, the provided lighting didn’t help either.

Now, these were the huge fascination of the evening.  These are makeshift candles.  We can only confirm that after asking for more lighting and watching the server carry them in their hands.  I think the biggest usefulness for these candles came as miniature flashlights so we could actually read the fine print.

When we come back to the menus, there were two of them.  They were both quite bulky and heavy.  I felt it was little too clumsy to have to manoeuvre with two separate menus.  There was one menu for beer and on for the food.  With the darkness, it was also a little difficult to tell them apart.

Despite the lack of literal clarity during the evening, the really big high point was the genuine sincerity of the service.  The server assigned to our table was attentive and smiling.  They answered all the questions that came from our large party and attended to our every need.

There is something that has to be said about the ambiance of the restaurant.  There was one table in particular that was there before I showed up.  When I go to restaurants, I tend to observe other tables to see how long they took.  Well, this table, with fewer people, stayed until about the time we all left.  This shows you that the restaurant, with beer a flowing, is quite comfortable to ham it up.  As a matter of fact, I spent a grand total of four hours in this place.  I have never spent 4 hours in a restaurant for a burger.  But, with the incredible “Compagnie” I was with, it was really easy to spend the 4 hours there with them, hamming it up.

Hambourgeois de boeuf

This burger contains lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, and bacon in a sauce made from wine.

My research into this burger location had me hesitating for a while.  I’ve known about this for a few months when one of my colleagues suggested it to me on a bus ride to the Metro.  Being the person who likes to add to the list, I immediately looked it up to fill in the gaps.  I found a burger that was topped with a wine sauce.  As you know, alcohol isn’t my forte, so having a burger like this wasn’t at the top of my list.  However, I’ll take any burger opportunity I can.

The second thing I was worried about was whether or not I could convince the server to get me bacon on the burger.  I figured since I saw bacon on the chicken burger, there should be no issues having bacon in my beef burger.  It’s one of the things I don’t understand.  Why do restaurants place priority for bacon on chicken burgers.  Is it that chicken is so un-burger like that it needs the awesomeness of bacon?  It probably is the case.

Well, since you know how the bacon request story ends by reading above, I’ll be happy to say that I got my wish.  However, it wasn’t as cut and dry as I thought it would be.  The person who brought out my food was ready to hand over the burger to me when I made sure to ask if it was the one with extra bacon.  That person had no clue and took it back to the kitchen.  Then, our server came back with bacon burger in hand and the meal was on.  Though, I felt weird when an unclaimed beef burger came to our table, as I was hoping it wasn’t my fault.

The first thing you notice when you take a bite of the burger was the unique taste of the beef.  Now, I don’t ever claim to be an expert on anything other than bacon, but the beef reminded me a lot of sausage.  I’m going to say that the sausage like taste can be attributed to the fact that there was probably some beer factored in somewhere.  Though the beef tasted different than what I was used to, it was pretty easy to eat and not off-putting at all.

After going through all the trouble for extra bacon, I had to make sure that my efforts weren’t in vain.  At first, I couldn’t see the bacon at all.  I had to pick out a tiny piece from the burger to make sure it was there.  The bacon itself was fine, but would probably suit a pizza better, as they were cut up so small that they got lost in the shuffle.

The big feature of the burger was obviously the sauce made from wine.  I had a few pieces of mushroom that fell out of the burger early on.  When I went to try those on their own, you really get overwhelmed by the aroma and taste of wine.  This is pretty much the same for the majority of the burger.  Unless your bite is mostly beef, the wine taste is dominant when I believe it shouldn’t be.  A burger should be dominated by the taste of beef and cheese, not wine.

Though the burger was a little overwhelmed with the taste of wine, I found it to be acceptable for the circumstances.  I liked the uniqueness of this burger and probably wouldn’t have a problem ordering this one again one of these days.  I wasn’t the only one who had the same beef burger that night and the opinions were similar.  That’s not necessarily true because I’m the only one who had the nerves to ask for bacon, so mine was automatically better.

Final Verdict

Your experience at this restaurant is exactly in the title, it’s beer and company.  In addition to the lighting, the food gets to take a back seat to the other great factors that you have.  Though, the food could probably stand out on its own, it’s the company that really puts it over the top.  It’s a wonderful place to relax after a long, hard week of stressful events.
