Mr. Lew's Great Burger Search

The month of April saw two big things in the realm of the Great Burger Search.  For one, the results from Philadelphia saw the light of day.  As that was going on, I had the chance to make a return to Boston for another slew of burgers and a second chance at a place that was closed the first time around.

A couple of months ago, I made my way to Westmount to check out one of the oldest restaurants in the city.  Along the way, I was scoping out Greene to seek out new places for my list.  Well, there was another place that wasn’t that far away.  That place was Bistro on the Avenue.

There have been two things that have started to crowd my life in the last year or so.  Those two things are sushi and all you can eat places.  While some people love them, others try their best to stay away from them.  I’m undecided on the topic.  But, a visit to Sushi St-Denis might push me in one direction or another.

For the final burger of this trip to Philadelphia, it was finally time for the first one chosen during the planning phase.  Located on one of the most unique streets in the entire city, this place was part of the top 50 restaurants in Philadelphia.  After bouncing back and forth through the city, it was finally time to make my way to Supper.

I don’t make it a secret when I say that I’m a teacher.  Over the last few years, my career has allowed me to be part of so many great opportunities and experiences, none of which I would trade with anyone else on this planet.  One of the perks that I’ve started to take advantage of is the chance to accompany our great students to places that they wouldn’t necessarily go to on their own.  Last year, we had the chance to spend 2 days in Boston.  To follow that up, we made our way further south to the city of Philadelphia.

The second day of our trip to Philadelphia took us to some of the most historical sites.  When you walk further south, you find yourself in the district known as the Italian Market.  While that might sound like a haven of pizza and pasta, it’s the home to staples such as the Philly cheesesteak.  While I would have loved to share that, there was one place that made sure I continued my burger search, which was Royal Tavern.

Success is often made out of second chances.  I’m so grateful that I got a second chance in my career, where I’m doing a whole lot better than the first time around.  Like in life, restaurants or locations often face the prospect of getting a second chance.  Located in the West Island, Athena is a place that is rebuilding a reputation.

In life, there are two words that we all have heard of that ruminate in the back of one’s mind and that’s the ‘bucket list.’  Over the course of the last 9 months, in planning my incursion into Philadelphia, there was one place that couldn’t be avoided because it was becoming one of the hottest places in the entire United States.  Well, I can officially cross a place off of my burger bucket list and it’s simply known as PYT.

Lately, I’ve been on pizza tour that has included a few places that I’ve been meaning to try.  The quality of some of these places may vary, but there’s one thing that’s completely consistent, they all serve pizza.  If you’ve spent any time near the McGill ghetto, you would have, no doubt, heard the name Amelios.

2013 was a breakthrough year for Mr. Lew’s Great Burger Search.  During that calendar year, I had the chance to go to our neighbors to the south to eat more burgers than ever before.  I wasn’t about to let 2014 go without more opportunities of that variety.  For the first time since last May, this search finds itself across the border in the capital of New York state at The Standard.

The month of March is usually a very significant month for me.  Each year, I make some of my best visits.  This year, there’s no exception.  For the first time ever, I got the chance to visit the city of Philadelphia, thus getting 3 of their top burgers done.  In the weeks that will come, I hope to share with you the fruits of that labor, alongside the highlights of a trip that I won’t soon forget.

If there are two things on this planet that I like a whole lot, it’s bacon and dessert.  When you combine two things that you love so much, you have pure bliss or maybe, a massive coronary.  Well, on a fateful March evening, I had the chance to visit Al & Jo to find something that I could only dream of.

The city of Montréal has pretty much anything that you’re looking for and in literally any category.  Aside from some of the best eating experiences in the world, the cultural scene is one that you can put against any other major city on this planet.  Montréal’s Quartier des Spectacles in home to many great venues and a whole lot of restaurants like Café République.

In 1912, the world was reeling from one of the most documented accidents ever.  That year may have been quite tragic, but there was at least one bright spot in this very city that we can be proud of.  For over 100 years, Montreal Pool Room has been serving the right kind of food to generations of hungry citizens.

In the city of Montréal, there’s one battle that’s just as fierce as the rivalry between the Habs and the Boo-ins or the Maple Laughs.  Like hockey, there’s one dish that unites us just as easily as it divides us.  If you haven’t guessed it by now, that dish is called pizza.  My latest stop for pizza comes from Geppetto.
